Founded January 14, 2009 by Colleen Paige, an amazing person with an unbelievably impressive resume when it comes to pet advocacy. She is a Pet and Lifestyle Expert, an Animal Behaviorist, Author, Animal Rescue Advocate and Conservationist.
Celebrated annually, this day was created to encourage pet parents to take time to interact and have fun with their pet by dressing them up in cute, pet-friendly outfits or costumes. Like you would in deciding on an outfit or costume for yourself, make sure you take the pets comfort and safety into consideration. Make sure the pet is able to see and breathe clearly. If something is to be tied around their neck, make sure it’s not tied too tight. As a benefit to both you and your pet, ensure that your pet is able to relieve themselves easily and without soiling the outfit.
Lil Miss hates costumes; she just stands there and don’t know what to do. She barely tolerates wearing ribbons or bows put on by the dog groomer after her grooming appointment. If your pet doesn’t like or don’t know how to act with a costume on, a simple ribbon, flower, bow tie or bandana around their neck, like a collar, may be an alternative. Some people opt for dressing themselves and their pet in matching outfits. I’ve even heard of a country club community having Pets on Parade in honor of the event. They either walk with their dressed up pet or they ride with them on a golf cart.
Once you get them dressed up, snap a picture, and post on social media with #DressUpYourPetDay for everyone to see. It is so cute seeing the pets dressed up and the creativity of the pet parents. You’re also welcome to share a picture of your dressed pet over at our forum in the “Pets” section.
Research shows pet owners are happier and healthier. Interaction with our pet increases the feel-good chemical oxytocin which lifts your spirit. Equally, the interaction brings joy and happiness to the pet.
Have a great time with your pet today!
